Inspiration

Deep below the emergent and canopy forest layers lies the understory. Vegetation requires light, and only robust plants can survive in understory conditions. Saplings battle to survive, often suppressing growth for decades. They’re saving their energy until a section of the overstory opens and allows nurturing light to shine in, allowing them to grow.

Life in the understory is an illustration of strength and resilience, of keeping watch for opportunity and seizing it when it appears. It’s an illustration of pausing to take advantage of small growth opportunities while aiming for greatness.

The Ascent collection uses simple textures, punctuated by a mesh lace that mimics light being let in to allow the pattern to grow. The short-repeat stitch patterns create a meditative quality that allows you to reflect on the growth catalysts in your own journey, while the changing textures build momentum to spur you on to your next knitventure.

Construction & Schematic

Construction

This shawl is worked flat from the top down and begins with a garter tab cast on. While increasing for a traditional triangle shape, alternating stripes of texture and lace are worked. A stretchy bind off keeps the shawl's edge flexible.
